essay on mahatma gandhi in english

Mahatma Gandhi was really an amazing person. So, today we are going to read a short essay on mahatma gandhi in english. Without wasting time lets get into our short essay on Mahatma Gandhi.

Second October comes and goes. Country enjoys 'NATIONAL HOLIDAY' as it is the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948). Innumerable biographies of Gandhi have been written. His own 'My Experiments with Truth' is an authentic document. His interviews with journalists and others, his articles appeared in 'Hari Jan' and other magazines, his experiments 'Salt Satyagrah' etc. are valuable record for a reader. He opposed the white rule in South Africa. His Round Table Conference participation as a half naked faqir shows his extraordinary personality. There was a question 'Could this lean and thin person conquer the British Mighty Power of the world without violence or blood-shed'? He had issued the following instructions to his followers using the weapon of non-violence :

1. If you are arrested, go to prison quietly.

2. If assaulted, bear it cheerfully.

3. If shot, die peacefully.

His speeches, addresses and letters despatched to various agencies are clear cut record from which we can build our article like this. He was sympathetic towards the lot of man kind, the forlorn, the untouchables, whose emancipation he sought. The struggle for its achievement took years together with his steadfastness quality.

This selfless man lived for others, was not at all anxious to have any big office even after independence. There were long dramatic marches of the people with Indian origin who refused to pay tax. This was a victory against the unjust behaviour of Smuts. These Indians had developed self confidence after years of serfdom. It was a miracle created by Gandhi. This technique of non-cooperation was transferred to home country after the successful achievement in the South Africa. To say that Gandhi gave us self respect is not wholly true. There was Tilak who had courageously made sedition the breath of self respecting Indians.

Gandhi applied his principles of non-violence and non-cooperation to economic, political and social problems with a courage and insight which marked him as a great personality of his time.

Whenever there was any difficult problem facing the British Govt. for the benefit of the nation, he started meditation and sought the solution from God. To him God was Truth. It is clear that he had no personal motive to serve. He faced Hindu-Muslim riots which pinched him much. But immediately he stopped satyagrah and went to meditation for solving the problem. His movements of Khadi, Charkha, Harijan uplift which required heroic and ceaseless struggle, all were for others and nothing for himself. Independence was a means to the great end delivering the far flung population of the land from poverty, hunger, disease and other miseries which degraded Indians in every walk of life.

His compaign in Champaran and Kaila encouraged him about his method. The Rowlet Act and Jallianwala Bagh presented the concentrated evil of the British regime masked by rule of law. He seized the opportunity. His political philosophy is known today as Gandhian non-violence. There were Himalayan blunders but there were cooperation and civil disobedience the results were not spectacular like the battle of Plassey or the battle of Waterloo, but advance was spectacular and lasting. Simon Commission was laughed out. The Round Table Conference was a music hall comedy. Even the Cripps Mission was a cruel insult. In 1920 Gandhi made us lose our fear of Jails; in 1930, we lost our fear of losing property: in 1942, we lost our fear of losing lives. Thus we got advancement in moral courage. In this way millions joined the struggle." Once prior to Independence, he declared:

"I shall strive for a constitution, which will release India from all patronage. I shall work for an India in which the poorest shall feel that it is their country, in whose making they have an effective voice, an India in which there shall be no high class and low class of people; in India in which all communities shall live in perfect harmony. There can be no room in such an India for the cause of un-touchability, all will enjoy the same rights as men. Since we shall be at peace, we shall have the smallest army. Personally I hate distinction between foreign and indigenous. This is the India of my dream....... shall be satisfied with nothing else".

Albert Einstein a scientist said "Generations to come, it may be will scarcely believe that, such a one as this ever in flesh and blood, walked upon earth."
